Fishing Essentials

Fishing is a great sport that has a huge community. It's like knitting; difficult and gritty at times but will give you great satisfaction once you catch something.

So let's say that you want to get into fishing, but you can't since you don't know how or even what you really need to start. ;That's exactly why I'm making this series. To help beginners really start out and learn how to fish. This is Part 1 of a multi blog series.So I hope you enjoy and let's get right into it.

What you Need to Know

Fishing is not as complex, nor is it as easy as it could sometimes seem. What you need to know though is that your fishing experience completely depends on where you live. If you live next to a lake in New Jersey you will be doing freshwater fishing.If you live in the Arctic then you will be doing ice fishing. If you live in California you will be doing ocean fishing. If you live in Kansas with no lake around for a hundred miles, you won't be doing fishing.And that's something to remember. If you don't live close to a fish-able area, don't get yourself any fishing equipment since you won't ever go that far just to maybe catch a fish.

Another thing to note is that I will only be discussing salt water and fresh water fishing in this series. So if you are interested in fly fishing or ice fishing then I recommend you read a different blog.

What you will need for Both Types of Fishing

Depending on the type of fishing that you will be doing you will need different specs on your equipment. If you will be going Saltwater fishing your gear will generally be a little heavier than gear for freshwater.

Fishing Rods

For Freshwater fishing I would recommend about a 20 pound rod, 6.5 or 7 feet in length. For Saltwater fishing I would recommend about a 50 pound rod, 10 or 11 feet in length.

Great Fishing Rod Brands are...
  • Ugly Stik. This rod is great for its price point and how well it functions.
  • Penn. This brand is a little expensive but functions the well.
  • Shimano. This brand is only for people that go fishing all the time. Though the price pointy is very high, it is considered by most to be the best(not me) but has a great quality guarantee.

Tip: If you are going to be doing both freshwater and Saltwater fishing I would get a 9 foot Ugly Stick elite. It is a good size for both types of fishing. It is strong, but still nimble enough to detect a small fish bite. It is currently my absolute favorite rod and I use it most of the times that I go fishing.

Reels

I would generally go for a Penn reel that isn't too big. Penn reels are reliable and work great.

Line

I would get line that is 5-10 pounds lighter than the weight that you're rod can take since if something is to break, the line would rip instead of the rod breaking. If you're line weight is under 20 pounds go with mono filament. If it is greater than 20 pounds go for braided line. If you get the 9 foot Ugly Stick elite I would get 35 pound braid.

Gear

I won't be going into gear in this blog since with every sub type of fishing gear needs differ.(by gear I mean things like the hook and stuff)

Bait

For the same reason as for gear I won't be going into it in this blog.
